EA To Buy PopCap Games For $1 Billion?

Earlier this year we’ve heard numerous reports that PopCap is looking for a buyer as this would be the first step that would allow the company to expand to other areas of the gaming market. It seems like the firm who wants to purchase PopCap is EA who’s also looking to expand its “services” and become a mobile-social company. The reported amount is $1 billion which is a huge sum as PopCap Games’ revenue in 2010 was around $100 million.

EA’s profit from last financial year was $677 million from a total revenue of $3.654 billion so if it will pay more than $1 billion for PopCap, then it better make at least $300 million in profit within five years to keep growing.

PopCap is popular among mobile users as the developer has released games like the Bejeweled series, Bookworm series, Feeding Frenzy series, Plants vs Zombies (one of the best tower defense games ever), Zuma, and many others.

EA is already an established published on mobile platforms, but the company has noticed that the mobile market is the future therefore it needs to have an edge over Activision per total. Among the most popular EA mobile applications we can find The Sims, NBA series, FIFA series, Dragon’s Lair, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Madden NFL series, Monopoly, NCAA Football series, Need for Speed series, Rock Band series, Tetris, and the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series.

For the moment both EA and PopCap have declined to comment on the rumors, but from where we’re looking, a deal is imminent and PopCap games will have en edge over Zynga with EA’s money at disposal.

Let’s just consider this a rumor for now and wait for more information to be revealed therefore stick with us cause we’re going to let you know as soon as something new surfaces.
