How To Get Full Control / Administrator Permissions In Windows

If you use Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you may know that you can get a full control to access all your computer features. The Windows OS have a protect option to prevent the viruses, the accidental deletion or the malicious attacks. The full control helps you to edit, to delete or to modify any file or any folder from your computer. If you know how to get a full control of your Windows computer, read the following article and then you will be able to make everything you want with your files and of course with your folders.

Here are the steps for How To Get Full Control / Administrator Permissions In Windows:

  1. First, in Windows Explorer you must to select a file or a folder that you want to change the protect control to a full control.

  2. Next, you must to press right click on the desired file or folder and then you must to press the Properties button.

  3. You will receive a window, where you must to press the Security tab.

  4. Now, you must to press the Advanced button.

  5. You will receive a new window, Advanced Security Settings, where you will be able to press the Owner tab.

  6. In the Current owner box you will be able to see the owner of your file or your folder.

  7. Now you must to press the Edit button.

  8. Very important: if the User Account Control will ask you to continue, you must enter the user name and the administrator account or you must press continue.

  9. You will receive another window, where you must to check the Administrator in the Change owner to box (if your user don’t appear in the Change owner to box, you must to press the Other users or groups… to find it).

  10. Next you must to press the OK button. After you have press the OK button, you will receive a notification, like this: If you just taken ownership of this object, you will need to close and reopen this object’s properties before you can view or change permissions. You simply press again the OK button.

  11. Now, you must to press on the Advanced Security Setting an on the Properties windows the OK button.

  12. Next, you must to repeat the the first, the second and the third steps and under Group or user names box you must to press the Edit button.

  13. You must to click on the user or on Administrator, depend what you choose at step 9((if your user don’t appear in the Group or user names, you must to press on the Add button to find it).

  14. Now, in the Permissions for Administrators or your user you must to check the Full Control box on the Allow column.

  15. When you check the Full Control box, all boxes( Modify, Read & execute, List folder contents, Read and Write) will automatically selected, of course without Special permissions box.

  16. Finally, you must to press the OK button and now your file or your folder will gives you full control.

Of course, there are other three methods to change the permissions and to get a full control.

The first method for How To Get Full Control / Administrator Permissions In Windows, using Command Prompt:

You can also change the permissions and get a full control in Command Prompt. You must to run the Command Prompt as Administrator.

For files you must to type the following commands:

  • takeown /f <file name> /d y

  • icacls<file name> /grant administrators:F

For folders you must to type the following commands:

  • takeown /f <directory name> /r /d y

  • icacls <directory name> /grant administrators:F /t

You must to change the <file name> or <directory name> with your desired file or folder name. Also, if you want to get a full control for a user account, you must to modify administrators word with your user or group name.

The second method for How To Get Full Control / Administrator Permissions In Windows, using Batch Script:

Anyone of us know what is Batch Script. Batch Script help us to get a full control on a file or on a folder. You must to download TakeControlOf.zip from here(need a registration). After you have downloaded the app, you simply use it, by open a Command Prompt as Administrator and then you must to enter the following syntax:

TakeControlOf <x:fullpathtofile or directory name>

For example: TakeControlOf C:WindowsTest_File.exeTakeControlOf C:Test_Directory

The third method for How To Get Full Control / Administrator Permissions In Windows, using Right Click Context Menu:

This is the last way, that helps you to get a full control access to your files or to your folders. You must to add the Take Ownership and Grand Full Control function to the right click menu, because then you must to access easily by right click and select a command in the right click menu. You must to save the following code in a text file and you must to give it the .reg extension. Here is the code:

You can also download TakeOwnership.zip from here. Then you must to unzip it and install TakeOwnership and then you must to run the .reg file to merge and install the necessary registry keys. And finally, for get full control, you must to press right click on your desired file or folder and then you must to choose Take Ownership.
