Nokia GEM Concept Revealed, Will Become The Ultimate Customizable Smartphone

Nokia is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Nokia Research Center with an at least interesting smartphone concept. It’s the Nokia GEM, a revolutionary phone concept with touchscreen allover the handset’s surface.
As you probably know, Nokia plans to assault the smartphones market. Thus they have singed a partnership deal with Microsoft and, at Nokia World 2011, they have presented two new Windows Phone 7.5 Mango smartphones that will join the Finland-based company’s line-up: the classy Nokia Lumia 800 and the affordable Nokia Lumia 710.
The Nokia GEM concept adapts according to how you are using it. If you are making a call, Nokia GEM acts like a phone; if you want to take a picture the concept phone transforms into a camera.
Nokia GEM concept was developed under the close guidance of Senior Design Manager Jarkko Saunamäki. Jarko thinks that GEM is “the ultimate customizable device.” The Finland-based company thought that GEM would be an appropriate name for their smartphone, as their concept is just like a precious stone: it has several sides.
Because both the front and the back of Nokia GEM are interactive, you can, for example, pinch to zoom on the rear of the device while keeping a constant clear view of the image on the front. Because you can have different zoom levels on each side of the Nokia GEM, you can keep a detailed map on the front and a large-scale map on the rear, making easier for you to flip between the two map instances.
Another interesting feature of Nokia GEM is that you can have ads on the back of the device while making calls which will result into bill discounts.
The Nokia GEM users will be able to create and use avatars, change the mood of their avatars and even interact with other Nokia GEM users via the avatars.
Because you can interact with all the Nokia GEM sides, you will be able to have a single wallpaper wrapped around your smartphone.
While watching the Nokia GEM presentation video the part when the apps are shared between the two devices made me think that the GEM will use NFC technology, making the apps, contacts, images, video and everything related to sharing easier.
Anyway, the Nokia GEM is the proof that the Nokia design division is not wasting time and that they are sitting at the work table they can come up with great ideas, ideas that sometime can revolutionize the smartphones world.
